Cristovam Buarque

PhD in Economics, professor at the University of Brasilia (where he was Chancellor from 1985 to 1989) and member of the UNESCO Institute for Education.


Cristovam Buarque has a PhD in Economics, is a professor at the University of Brasilia (where he was Chancellor from 1985 to 1989) and a member of the UNESCO Institute for Education. He is now a senator and one of the leading PDT (Democratic Workers' Party) candidates for the presidency of Brazil.
Buarque was also Brazil's minister of education in 2003.
During his career, Buarque has published twenty books, collaborated on a great number of newspapers and journals and worked as a consultant for a range of national and international bodies. He has also been Chair of the United Nations' University for Peace Council.
