David Istance

Senior member of the OECD's Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) and director of the Schooling for Tomorrow and Innovative Learning Environments research projects.


David Istance is a senior analyst at the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation. He was acting head of the Centre during 2008 and heads the long-running Schooling for Tomorrow programme and the new Innovative Learning Environments project.

Among the reports he wrote as part of this work are ‘What Schools for the Future?’, 2001; ‘Education Today: The OECD Perspective’, 2009; and (with Henno Theisens) ‘Trends Shaping Education’, 2008.

Istance has also written on subjects including lifelong learning and equity. Between 1991 and 1997 he worked at the Universities of Cardiff and Swansea and he remains an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Cardiff.

He is also on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Education and the Korean KEDI Journal of Educational Policy.
